YSA Program information

Executive Summary

The teens will have an opportunity to explore various STEM careers by exploring internship and volunteer opportunities.  There will be three platforms that will be based on age.  These platforms will be designed to encourage participants to work a set number of hours that will allow them to master the skill sets of that profession and obtain their certificates upon completion.  The program will begin effective January 2024.   The awards will consist of: Commission's Award, Mayor's Award and the President's Award.

  • The Mayor’s Award gives Transylvania area students the opportunity to learn and serve their community in a meaningful way. Students who complete the required number of volunteer hours at area nonprofits during summer break will be recognized at a ceremony in the fall. Annually, collectively, students will serve more than 30,000 hours of community service throughout the Transylvania Area through the Mayor’s Award!

  • The Commissioners' Award program recognizes the hard work of students who volunteer 40+ hours during the school year. If students earn enough hours, they will automatically receive the President's Award. (They must submit a separate time sheet for the Presidential Award.)

President's Volunteer Service  / Academic Award

  • The PVSA is a prestigious national honor offered in recognition of volunteer commitment. This award honors individuals and groups who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service over the course of 12 months.

  • Grade Point Average: Students are to earn a grade point average of 90 on a 100 point scale, (an A on a letter scale or a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale). When computing grade point averages at the respective award level, only the years at that level are to be included through the fall semester of the existing grade.
