RISE & SHINE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM
Enabling Academic Gains in a
Supportive Environment
Rise & Shine Freedom School provides an enjoyable afterschool educational program for eligible students and their parents. Regardless of background, every scholar gets personalized support to improve academic achievement, enhance cultural/social experiences, and build self-esteem in a productive environment.
Rise & Shine is the ONLY local K-12 after school program that offers
◾one-on-one tutoring
◾early focus on Reading and Comprehension
◾STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) activities
◾lessons in African American history and culture
◾outdoor enrichment activities
◾tools for academic and collegiate success
Our teen scholars also participate in opportunities for
◾skill-building
◾volunteerism
◾mentoring of our younger scholars.
Rise & Shine operates learning centers in two school districts, scholars from four different schools. Our data shows that the longer a student remains enrolled in the Rise & Shine Freedom School program, the more they stand to benefit.
◾Increased grade promotion
◾Fewer absences
◾Improved grades
◾Higher test scores in English and math
◾Fewer disciplinary incidents in middle and high school
AFTERSCHOOL
Current afterschool participants are able to transition to Study Hall where volunteers help scholars navigate homework assignments, answer questions, and support a positive learning environment.
Most Study Hall blocks extend for one hour, but we are flexible to meet scholar needs. Before and after the Study Hall block, scholars transition to their Afterschool Track.
We support STEAM curriculum with cross-disciplinary and project-based activities encompassing disciplines including Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics to guide student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.
