Award Eligibility

  • Youth ages 12-18 may apply.

  • Awards will be issued for hours served between the first day and last day of summer break.

  • Volunteer hours completed before participants register will not count as long as the hours served are during their summer break, effective September 29, 2023..

  • Hours MUST be completed at a nonprofit that is legally registered with the State of North Carolina and is listed as a Nonprofit & Volunteer organization. The database will be available for participants to check if the organization is a certified 501c3 Nonprofit. 

  • Awards will be issued for volunteer service only. No payment of any kind can be received from the organization served.

  • Court-ordered community service does not count towards total hours volunteered for the award.

  • If participants complete enough hours, they will automatically receive the President’s Award. (Participants must have a separate timesheet for the President’s Award).

  • Work hours will be Mon. - Fri. between 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm and Sat. between 8:00 am - 9:00 pm. 

Essay Contest

As participants complete their volunteer obligations, they should consider entering the Mayor’s Award essay contest. The theme will be “The Benefits of Volunteering, and/or Why it is important to be active in their community”. The essay should be 3-5 pages double spaced, with a font no larger than 12 points. Participants should give their essay an original title. They are to use their summer experience, other volunteering, and their own ideas to talk about the importance of volunteering. The winning essay will be read at the Award Ceremony in the fall. The deadline for the essay is TBA, to be turned in with their application, or they may turn it in early. Resources Needed

Many Award recipients will  also be eligible to receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award. An application will be available to apply for multiple awards. 

 There are three levels available:

  • BRONZE: 40+ hours of service

  • SILVER: 80+ hours of service

  • GOLD: 120+ hours of service

Conclusion 

Students who complete the required number of volunteer hours at area nonprofits during summer break are recognized by the award ceremony in the fall.
